An entry foyer can help set the mood and style for a house, with the staircase often taking center stage. This was the case of Mark and Mina Fies’ home in Reston, Va., this year’s Model ReModel project.
Because the couple, also owners of Synergy Design & Construction, wanted to give their house a modern edge, they decided a new floating staircase would be a smart, minimalist choice. Such designs often need to be custom, meaning a big expense for the design, materials, and labor.
But with Viewrail’s FLIGHT system, the couple found a handsome, affordable design that would fit within their budget. The Goshen, Ind.-based company serves both the single-family and multifamily builder and renovation markets with interior and exterior stairways and railings. Additionally, the company handles all design, engineering, and manufacturing for the stairs and railing components with a wide choice of materials available, from steel to wood, glass, aluminum, and stainless-steel cable materials.
When it came to the Fies’ specific choices, they went with cable railing because of its contemporary open look, which is among the most popular now for remodelers, says company sales manager Austin Williamson. “We always wanted a cable rail,” says Mina, CEO of Synergy. They chose walnut treads, which match much of the flooring in their home and many of the kitchen cabinets.
Going with twin floating staircases also saved time since they could be manufactured in the factory rather than on the Jobsite. The stairway components were shipped as a kit, the existing stairway was demolished, some structural support was added, and then new stairways were installed by Synergy’s team.
