Best practice: In the past, Nathan had problems with subcontractors being pulled onto different jobs, so now he’s willing to pay a premium to make sure his projects are completed correctly and on time. He also controls all materials for a project. Occasionally he runs into a tradesperson unwilling to work with this approach, but most of the time it hasn’t been a problem. Nathan’s system also helps the company control payments, so NWC doesn’t “get slapped with a materials lien down the road,” he explains. And there’s another benefit, he says: “Five years from now, if a homeowner has a problem—say their baseboard got ruined—we know exactly what they have in their home. I’m less confident that the subs will keep the proper paperwork.”
