I had been working for Saks Fifth Avenue in Chicago as a selling and service supervisor. I was in Milwaukee modeling clothing at a fashion show when a manager from a renowned, national window and door company approached me.
I didn’t know anything about construction or the company, but I agreed to meet with the general manager in Milwaukee the following week. He explained that home improvement wasn’t that much different from selling high fashion: Instead of making a person look and feel good with the right outfit, I would be making that person’s home look good with energy-efficient doors and windows.

I sold more than $1 million in projects my first year. I was with that company for the past five years before joining Abby Windows & Exteriors, a local, woman-owned business, a few months before COVID hit. Now I’m designing sales curriculum for Abby that will develop salespeople from the ground up—no construction or sales experience necessary.
