Best practice: I use modeling software. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still very hands on, and the first schematic floorplans/site plans/elevations I still draw by hand. There is just something about getting a feel of my hand with conceptualizing space. After that, I bring it in through Revit, Sketchup, or Rhino, and it makes figuring out details that one can’t foresee on paper so much easier.
Especially now with the advent of Lumion, it is easy to have a full blown presentation ready for a client in a matter of hours, when this used to take days. There is such ease and speed of doing it through programs like this. I can create a full-blown design and get the clients on board, get them to fall in love. And then everything else just afterwards falls into place.
