Redesign a Bathroom Using Universal Design

July 1, 2000

Manufacturers are increasing their offerings of aesthetically pleasing universal design products. Bathroom designs don’t have to sacrifice beauty in favor of functionality during a remodel. Whichever products are used, universal redesigns should incorporate the following elements, according to American Standard:

  • Single-lever or easy-to-use faucets for sink, shower and tub
  • Higher, wall-mounted toilets
  • Wall-mounted or countertop lavatories that allow wheelchair access
  • Grab bars near toilets, showers and tubs
  • Skid-free flooring, and slip-resistant tub and shower surfaces
  • Enlarged doorways
  • Scald-protection faucets
  • Shower seats, either permanent or fold-down
  • Hand-held sprays for the shower
  • No-barrier shower access
