Adding color and personality to a laminate countertop installation is possible without special-ordering a custom-made set of countertops. Edge treatments are a quick, inexpensive and easy way to introduce creativity into a countertop project.
Beveled edges are currently a popular add-on to laminate countertops, and can be created by a remodeler with the proper tools, or ordered directly from a manufacturer. Beveled edges consist of a different pattern, style or type of laminate used on the visible edges of a countertop and possibly as a backsplash. The actual working surface of the countertop can consist of a practical color and pattern, such as a speckled white, and the showing edges and backsplash can add color to the design.
Beveled edges can also be shaped, adding depth and more dimension to an otherwise plain countertop. Laminate countertops don’t have to have laminate edges either. Hardwood and solid-surface edges can also be attached to laminate decks for a more extravagant look.
"Having a beveled edge is just a matter of labor," says Richard Baehr of Nevamar technical services. "You have everything there, you just have to miter it. If a beveled edge has to be made, not everyone has the tools to do that, but some manufacturers will do it for you. It does [dress] up a blase countertop."
