Products: How Dangerous is Laminate Flooring?

March 11, 2015

In the wake of the recent expose on high formaldehyde levels in Lumber Liquidator’s Chinese-made laminate flooring, a nonprofit tests the product from various manufacturers.

In a 60 Minute report hosted by correspondent Anderson Cooper, the organization Global Community Monitor, backed by an environmental attorney, bought 150 boxes of laminate flooring in California and had them tested in three independent labs.

They found that laminate flooring from Home Depot and Lowe’s had acceptable levels of formaldehyde. It was the same for American-made laminates manufactured by Liquid Liquidators, but the company’s Chinese-made flooring failed to meet California formaldehyde emissions standards, with levels of the cancer-causing chemical that were 20 times higher than permitted.
