When soil, gravel, and other natural materials are compressed into solid walls, you have rammed-earth, a method that has existed for several millennia.
In it's Real Estate section, The Wall Street Journal reports that this ancient construction method is durable, energy efficient, and making “a surprising reappearance in multimillion dollar homes.”
