Building Science: Introduction to the Physics of Water in Porous Materials

Everyone knows water can be liquid, solid, or vapor. But there’s a fourth state, and building science expert Alison Bailes thinks it's worthwhile for builders and contractors to understand what it is.

When water in liquid or vapor form is absorbed into porous materials, it becomes something else, the fourth state of water. “It's most similar to liquid water, but it's not as free to move as liquid because it's bound more strongly to the surface than it is to the surrounding water molecules,” Bailes writes.
