Design: A Damp-Proofed Home in Venice Combats Rising Tides

Preventing a home from floodwaters doesn’t mean homeowners need to commission a utilitarian-looking addition or tweak.

Italian architecture practice Act_Romegialli was asked to restore the ground floor of a private residence in Venice’s Fondamenta di San Giobbe, a canal side street where homes are constantly fighting the rising tides of the Adriatic Sea.

Design web magazine Dezeen showcases what they designed: a concrete basin that fends off flooding from the city’s waterways. A modern and subtle solution that respects the antique exterior of the townhome while adding surprise to the interiors, all while making sure water doesn’t enter the residence.
