In case you weren’t sure if there is such thing as copyright infringement on a set of construction plans, we’ll set the record straight: it exists.
According to The Lien Zone, “courts have found that an original design of a building embodied in any tangible medium of expression, including plans or drawings, is subject to copyright protection.”
It’s not just about protecting your own plans—remodelers should also consider where plans given by a client come from. Frequently, a homeowner or developer, unhappy with a bid by one contractor, would take that contractor’s design and specifications to a different contractor to do the job.
