There are plenty of ways to cool down in the summer without contraptions – try culture or cupolas.
The website TreeHugger aggregates all the articles they have published that relate to living an air conditioning-free lifestyle. They range from an analysis of cultures in countries where heat is barely mitigated, such as in Spain and Switzerland, to a discussion on how window units turned architects lazy.
One building design tip, especially for warmer climates, is building a cupola. “Cupolas are as functional as they are decorative,” one article in the series written by Matt Grocoff says. “As warm air rises, cupolas allow hot air to escape at the high points in the house while bringing up cooler air from below.”
