Storm Warning: Houses Need to Be Stronger
Severe storms are becoming such a common occurrence in the U.S. that it’s changing the way homes are built.
In an interview with Business Insurance, risk expert Carl Hedde, of New Jersey-based Munich Reinsurance America, says that, “... we have to support stronger building codes, stronger building practices, [and] better incentives.”
In the first half of 2017 there have been 49 weather events, accounting for an estimated $21 billion in economic losses, according to Hedde. “Ultimately, it’s going to change the way the house is built,” he told Business Insurance.
That provides an opportunity for contractors, who can both weigh in on code changes and educate their prospects and clients when in the field.
