Patio Proliferation

Dec. 19, 2018

Source: NAHB tabulation of data on new single family homes started, from Survey of Construction data, U.S. Census Bureau and HUD.

An analysis of U.S. Census Bureau Survey of Construction data found that in 2017, the share of new homes with patios hit 59%, or nearly two out of every three homes. It’s the highest share in over decade. They’re most popular in the south and west of the Mississippi.

Additionally, data showed that while porches and patios are becoming more common on new homes, decks are slowly becoming less so. Since 2005, the share of new homes with decks has fallen from 26% to 23.8%.
