Lessons From the Family Farm:

Growing up on the family farm where we grew milo, beans and raised cattle, my parents, Holly and Steve, gave me a really strong work ethic. I’ve been with Heartlands for 11 years. Larry Brost, the company’s former owner, also had a crazy work ethic. He saw what I could do and made me a project manager within two and a half years. I became a partner a year later, and then a part owner six years ago. When Larry retired on January 1, I obtained full ownership of the company. I joke that I went from being a ‘dumb’ carpenter to partner and eventually running the company, making sales and all decisions. That was a big switch for me, along with a lot of trial and error.

I’ve been around construction almost all my life, starting in high school where the first four hours of my junior and senior years were attending a building trades program at a VoTech Center. It’s a lot more stress, but in a way not that much different from when I was a project manager. The hours are longer with some. I thank my parents for the work ethic and Larry for his support.
