The History of the Remodeling Industry
The modern day remodeling industry is likely not much older than you, or your parents.
On this episode of Remodeling Mastery, host and industry expert Mark Richardson walks listeners through his cliff notes version of the 50-year history of remodeling. By providing insight into the roots of remodeling, Richardson says remodelers can gain a better perspective.
In the 60s and 70s, home remodeling didn't truly exist, says Richardson. If a homeowner wanted a different lifestyle, they didn't choose to remodel back then—they just moved. In the 80s, media pushed awareness through increases in "shelter magazines," aside from the originals, such as Better Homes & Gardens.
"In the early 80s, that's when this organization that's become one of the stakes in the sand, so to speak, called Home Depot," says Richardson. "And Home Depot started by saying, 'I think that homeowners or people out there on a do-it-yourself side, but also a professional side, lets start with these giant warehouses. I remember going into one of the early Home Depots in the 80s, I was like a kid in the candy store."
