On industry involvement and next gen: Involvement in the Home Builders Association isn’t as big of a deal to people under 40. I got involved in the state and national level about 10 years ago, and that propelled our business and my professional development. I’m currently serving as president elect for the North Carolina HBA. There’s a big deal about workforce development, but we partnered with the Department of Labor and seek legislative funds for the initiative of Be Pro Be Proud trucks, where a training group goes out to middle and high schools to give hands-on experience with skilled trades. The vision is changing lives and changing the stigma of our industry. I’m not going to take all credit for that, it comes back to our association.

On systems and processes: The hardest thing that I see others struggle with, and that I struggle with, is simplicity. It’s really easy to add new processes or systems. All of a sudden you have pages and pages of manuals and processes. I just want to be the person in the room that tries to figure out the more simple way to do something. How can we go from 40 pages to two? When we do that, we’re more efficient.
