A while back, I visited with a remodeler who happened to have an appointment with a consultant that day. I asked if I could sit in, and he agreed. The consultant was a well-known industry professional specializing in sales and operations. I listened as my remodeler friend outlined what was happening in his business, and the consultant offered suggestions. Three things impressed me enough that I still remember them today.
First: the consultant’s accuracy. He correctly diagnosed bottlenecks in the remodeler’s processes and offered clear solutions that the business owner hadn’t thought of because he was too close to the problem. And these weren’t pat, templated insights, they were customized to the remodeler’s exact business needs.
Second: speed. The appointment lasted half an hour—more like 25 minutes after you subtract hellos and goodbyes. Yet the consultant managed to squeeze incredible value into that short time. He listened, asked a few laser-focused questions, and then moved right into his insights.
Third: the remodeler’s reaction to the session. He told me that, in terms of ROI, it was the best business investment he had made. Before I left that day, he had already scheduled meetings with his leadership team to start implementing the consultant’s solutions.
