A lot of companies have a mission statement, but Gottlieb follows more of a guiding principle. “I define what I will and will not tolerate in business,” he says. “I do not tolerate negativity, disrespect, and inaction. Anything else I can work with you on.”

Biggest Challenge: Bringing a newly acquired Milwaukee unit into the fold. “The business had a tremendous amount of potential, but it required a lot of change,” says Gottlieb, who temporarily moved to Milwaukee to work closer with that unit’s leaders. “It was very challenging getting our businesses united in all ways—process, structure, customer experience, and employee experience—which is why I’m so proud of it.”

Professional Strategy: Focusing on process improvements, asking for feedback, and analyzing how customer and employee experiences can be honed. “It’s important to know these things—big or small,” he says. One small change with a big impact: new shirts with a larger logo and revised scripts for the canvassing team. “We were getting a lot of pushback from homeowners, and some would call the cops on us because our team was struggling to be identified in the field,” he says.

Outside of Work: Performs hula-hoop fire dancing routines at local events—although not as often as he’d like these days.
