Designer, Emerald Design Studio, Rochester, N.Y.

Remote design work can provide a service to a business that has a need but is not looking to add a designer to its staff. This equation works well for Sarkis, who’s been able to successfully collaborate with builders, remodelers, and designers across 15 states and bring an innovative, high-quality vision for kitchen and bath designs to a wide range of clients.

Over the past 18 months, her biggest challenge has been streamlining communication and sharing information virtually across multiple teams and locations. To address this, she’s tried different project management software, cloud-based design sharing, and clearer communication protocols that have improved workflow and client satisfaction.

Success in 3D: Sarkis’ biggest business innovation has been incorporating 3D walkthroughs into the design process. “While high-quality renderings provide a great visual representation, the ability for clients to virtually walk through their new space offers a whole new level of understanding,” she says. “This has been especially valuable for new builds or major renovations where walls are being removed, and it helps clients visualize architectural changes with confidence.”

For Fun: Sarkis enjoys playing tennis, watching movies, walking the dog, and traveling the world with her husband.
