On April 2, President Trump announced sweeping tariffs on imported goods that very likely would mean higher prices for key building materials in the U.S. Then, on April 9, the President announced a 90-day pause on most of them. This stop-and-start process has roiled markets and caused uncertainty in the remodeling and home improvement industries.

Pro Remodeler initiated a survey of design-build firms and home improvement businesses soon after the tariffs were launched. We wanted to gauge reactions to and concerns about the tariffs and what affect, if any, they might have on the remodeling industry.

The Sampling

The survey launched on April 3, and over the course of a week of wild ups and downs, we collected around 100 responses from those working in remodeling, home improvement, and related fields.

The Responses

1. Slightly more than half (52%) of respondents said they were very or extremely worried about the tariffs.

2. Thirty-nine percent correctly predicted that the tariffs would be short-lived. (However, what might happen after the 90-day pause is unknown, and the tariffs could be reinstated or reformulated.)

3. The degree of support for the tariffs was almost even among respondents, with 43% saying they were in favor and 41% saying they were not.

4. Respondents said they expected to lose business, with 67% saying they anticipated consumers would pull back on remodeling and home improvement projects.

5. The majority of respondents (77%) said they have at least some plans in place to contend with material cost increases and potential shortages.
