Updates make nailable solar shingles more efficient, easier to install

The nailable Timberline Solar ES 2 shingles from GAF Energy, the solar business unit of GAF, offer 57 watts of power per shingle—23% more than the version the company launched in 2022. The updates also intend to make the shingles easier to install and improve aesthetics by reducing the size of the transition boxes and simplifying the wiring.

“Timberline Solar ES 2 represents everything we’ve learned about solar roofing, enhanced by extensive feedback from contractors and homeowners,” Martin DeBono, President of GAF Energy, said in a news release.

The company says the Timberline Solar ES 2 is the first nailable solar shingle, and they don’t require additional solar panel racks drilled into the roof because they install directly onto the underlayment like a traditional asphalt shingle. With a depth of a quarter-inch, the solar shingles are compatible with the entire line of GAF Timberline shingles so the finished roof looks cohesive.

GAF Energy says the Timberline Solar shingles meet numerous third-party safety standards addressing both roofing and solar.

The Timberline Solar roofing system is installed by GAF-certified contractors; therefore, Solar ES 2 shingles currently are availability only in select markets. The company says availability will increase as more installers complete their certification.
