More than half (54%) of the nearly 22,000 homeowners responding to the 2025 U.S. Houzz & Home Study said they renovated their homes in 2024. The median spend was $20,000, down slightly from its peak in 2023 of $24,000. Kitchen remodels were the most popular type of renovation, followed by primary bathrooms.

Homeowners in the top 90th percentile spent $140,000 or more on renovations, which is also a decline from $150,000 reported in the 2023 study. While the numbers show an overall softening of median spending on kitchen and bathroom remodels (down 8% and 13%, respectively), major remodels continue to drive the market.

Major large kitchen and bathroom renovations held strong, with median spending of $55,000 and $25,000, respectively, while major renovations of small kitchens (less than 200 sq. ft.) and bathrooms (less than 100 sq. ft.) saw growth. Median spending for small kitchens rose by 9% to $35,000, and major remodels of small bathrooms increased by 13% to $17,000.

Professional remodelers remain the top choice among homeowners, with 9 in 10 choosing to hire a professional. Nearly half of homeowners (49%) hired specialty service providers, up from 47% in 2023.

The majority (84%) of homeowners said they dipped into their savings for home renovations, while 29% used credit cards and 12% secured a home loan. Homeowners making higher-end renovations are more likely to use secured home loans ranging from $50,000 to $200,000.

Fifty-six percent of homeowners who made renovations held full equity in their homes, with a 61% saying they are committed to living in their home for a minimum of 11 years following completion of the remodel. The top reasons for undertaking a remodeling project: homeowners finally had the time and the financial means to do so.

Baby Boomers and Gen X homeowners continue to lead in renovation activity (59% and 29%, respectively), with each meeting the median national spend of $20,000. Meanwhile, seniors represented a smaller group, but their median spend was slightly higher at $22,000.

Gen X are the most likely to pursue luxury projects, spending $150,000 or more, followed by Baby Boomers and Millennials at $125,000 or more each.

Homeowners who made renovations to hardscape and structural features focused on decks (14%), sheds/workshops (8%), and gazebos/pergolas (7%).
