The Chrysalis Awards program began in 1994 and recognizes the nation’s best remodeling and design work in 16 general categories of residential and commercial remodeling. The Chrysalis Awards are open to all professional remodelers and design professionals in the United States.
This year, 79 remodeling and design companies were honored as winners of the 2013 Chrysalis Awards for Remodeling Excellence. The winning projects were selected from over 300 entries judged on overall design, the creative use of space and materials, and the degree to which the project enhanced the original structure.
While many of this year’s winning companies have won multiple Chrysalis awards over the years, there are some that have won 10 or more since Chrysalis became a national competition in 2000. So let us take this opportunity to congratulate them for their demonstration of excellence over that time.

The main goal was to transform this kitchen (at left) into an updated, open, cohesive and distinctive space aesthetically. It also needed to be convenient and enjoyable for cooking and entertaining. To alleviate the closed-in nature of the area, three rooms were combined intone large room and opened up to the front hall, dining room and den. A bar and wine storage was installed, as well as an island with seating for 3 people. A new bay window provides the desired deep windowsill by the sink and makes the kitchen brighter. Light-colored marble counters and backsplash also help to brighten the kitchen. Custom cabinetry and a distinctive island and range hood cover add character. These items, and the kitchen as a whole, beautifully merge style and utility. This room is now inviting and conducive to entertaining.

Jackson Design and Remodeling, San Diego, Calif.
For a couple sharing a master bathroom (at left) in the home they have owned for more than 30 years, a sense of separate space was essential. They wanted a modern organic aesthetic with earthy simplicity. Space planning was critical for this master bath, created from the existing bathroom plus room borrowed from a little-used landing. Distinct areas for the husband and wife mirror each other with pleasing symmetry and create the sense of personal space the clients desired. Floating vanity cabinetry is an architectural element that establishes a light, open feeling. Haze Alzak recessed lighting, a mindful choice for environmentally conscious clients, provides the best light output with the least amount of glare. The design’s appealing character is expressed with material and finish choices. Quarter sawn oak cabinetry displays a subtle, complex texture. Dramatic slab travertine in the shower is reminiscent of the surrounding sandstone hills, much beloved by the clients.

Outdoor Living
Outdoor Living
Anthony Wilder Design/Build, Inc., Cabin John, Md.
The client wanted to reconfigure his back yard (at left) to create a four-season outdoor living space, divided into 4 distinct areas…a dining room, a sitting lounge, a pool/spa area, and a well-manicured lawn area. We knew this project was an overwhelming success when the owner invited us to a gathering shortly after completing the project. He proudly greeted each guest at his new front entry. From there, everyone was enjoying some part of his private outdoor retreat…there were people playing cricket on the perfectly level lawn, there were several people swimming and marveling over the new steps in the pool, the hot tub was at capacity, the dining area was filled with friends nibbling and imbibing, and every seat in the sitting lounge was taken, the gas lanterns were all lit and both sides of the fireplace were blazing. We recently received a note from the client stating that he loves his backyard so much that he spends almost no time inside the home.

Whole House Remodel Under $250,000
Custom Design/Build Inc., Ann Arbor, Mich.
The desire for sanctuary transformed this 1980’s, T1-11 Ranch into a contemporary, Zen cottage. Nestled in an old growth forest, two blocks from Lake Michigan…we combined understated lines with bold forms to emphasize a seamless flow of indoor (top)/outdoor (bottom) spaces. Exposed concrete columns and corrugated steel combine with a standard shingle roofline to marry “cutting edge” with cutting costs. Hardipanel and Azek board & batten, high efficiency windows, recycled timbers and a carefully designed thermal envelope offer a low maintenance, eco-friendly design.

Whole House Remodel $250,000-$500,000
Whole House Remodel $250,000-$500,000
Allen Associates, Santa Barbara, Calif.
This whole house remodel was a wonderful transformation of a classic California ranch style beach bungalow into a modern villa retreat. The original residence, built in 1952, was dated. Numerous small rooms made it feel crowded and even smaller than it actually was. The remodel opened up the kitchen to the dining and living rooms to create one larger space. Two old bedrooms were converted into one master bedroom and bath. These changes, along with new light finishes, custom-made windows and French doors, created an open plan that is light and airy with a feel of casual elegance. Living spaces now open seamlessly to generous outdoor patios, water fountains, walled private garden, and lush tropical landscaping.
