Stick vs. Unit

Although Tim Englert is a big believer in computerized unit costing, he acknowledges that stick estimating makes sense in some cases. For instance, most tear-out is done on a unit basis, but if the job seems to be unusually difficult, he’ll add additional cost for stick labor.

"When a job is very unusual or will involve unique challenges, we’ll manually do some stick estimating to add to our unit pricing," he says.
