Challenge
The Borough of Conshohocken, The Malvern Preparatory School and The Haverford School decided to build a new sculling facility along the banks of the Schuylkill River just north of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Conshohocken Rowing Center (CRC) project was awarded to TimberStrong Deck Panels, a Division of Northeast Products and Services, Inc., which provided the engineering, design, manufacturing and installation for the docks and deck.
The extensive floating dock, gangway and deck project called for almost 350 linear feet of dock and a 24’ x 124’ cantilevered upper-level deck.
The company needed to utilize a decking material that would provide the following:
- A deck board rated for a 24” span, to save weight and reduce framing costs
- A product that allows for ground contact, without comprising performance
- Extreme durability to hold up for long-term, heavy use in a four-season, moist environment
Solution
The dock and deck material selected was NyloDeck in "Desert Spice" utilizing the TimberStrong Deck Panels fastening system.
“NyloDeck was the perfect material for this vast dock and decking project,” noted Scott Tihansky, President and CEO of Northeast Products and Services, Inc. “Much of today’s composite decking contains wood flour, which is not the ideal component for ground contact needs in high moisture environments. NyloDeck contains no wood flour, and it can span 24 inch centers, which reduces framing expense. In addition, the natural wood-like, attractive appearance of the material was an aesthetically great choice for such a large expanse."
Ideal for dock applications, NyloDeck is dimensionally stable and inherently strong due to its unique composition. Made using 100 percent recycled carpet fiber, NyloDeck does not contain wood or organic materials. Containing no PVC, NyloDeck boards are exceptionally strong, lightweight and offer ease in installation.
As the only one inch composite decking board rated to span 24” joists on center, NyloDeck delivers rigidity and strength, along with resistance to moisture, mold, mildew and termites. NyloDeck is able to withstand direct ground and water contact without warping, swelling or buckling. The material also possesses the industry’s best expansion and contraction rates.
TimberStrong's panelized fastening system allows the decking to be installed four to five times faster than traditional fastening methods, which enables projects to be completed quicker with significantly less on-site labor.
NyloDeck is manufactured in the USA by NyloBoard, LLC in Covington Georgia. In addition to NyloDeck, the company also produces NyloPorch, tongue and groove porch flooring and NyloSheet panels used in a variety of construction applications.
