More than 1.9 million people nationwide either sell, install, or service energy-efficient systems, according to an analysis by advocacy groups Environmental Entrepreneurs and E4TheFuture. The number is expected to grow by 13 percent in 2017. These markets primarily include HVAC, lighting, and insulation.
California leads the nation with 321,000 workers, according to the study. The Golden State is followed by Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Ohio, and Texas. The majority of these tradespeople—70 percent—work for companies with fewer than 10 employees.
