Just How Durable is Stainless Steel?

Salt water, extreme cold and other harsh conditions can be brutal on building materials.

So how do stainless-steel railings compare with aluminum and other materials in these challenging environments?

“We build a lot on Puget Sound, on islands and in coastal environments,” says Brian Abramson, Co-Founder of Method Homes in Seattle. “My experience is that stainless holds up much better than powder-coated aluminum.”

For Ryan Hanson, Partner at Sustainable Nine Design + Build in Minneapolis, salt water isn’t a factor, but extreme cold is. “All of the stainless railings we’ve installed have held up very well in our local climate,” he says.
