Remodeling Salary Survey
Professional Remodeler is undertaking a bold, ambitious project. We’re conducting an industry salary survey in 16 major markets. Right now, it’s impossible to find this information in a public, reliable format, and we’re going to change that.
The salary survey is an important initiative.
Locally, the data will provide remodelers with valuable insight into their markets. Nationally, we’re going to address the labor shortage by shining a light on the pay and stability these jobs provide. Once completed, we plan to distribute the information to high schools and community colleges so that young people can see the possibilities open to them in this industry.
I’d greatly appreciate your support in helping us obtain this data.
What Are We Asking You to Do?
We’d like you to fill out a survey and provide the salaries of some of your employees. The questionnaire takes about 15 minutes. And ten respondents will win one of these cool saws.
How Is Your Privacy Protected?
The responses are anonymous—we don’t even ask for any identifying information (unless you want to enter to win a saw). The data will be published only in aggregate.
Is This a Nationwide Survey?
Yes and no. Right now, we’re targeting 16 metro markets around the U.S. The cities were chosen based on population, housing prices, remodeling activity, and growth in the remodeling market over the past five years. At first, we were going to just divide the country into regions, but we soon rethought that plan. A remodeler in Chicago is probably paying a different salary than one in rural Wisconsin, and a regional study would report the average of those two numbers. That’s a lot less useful than 16 highly accurate data fields. That said, we’ve received a lot of surveys from other markets. If that continues, we’ll report those as well.
Who Are We Asking About?
This was another tricky one. One company’s lead carpenter is another company’s project manager. After a lot of discussion, we came up with eight job titles and a loose list of duties for each one. We’re asking remodelers to look at the descriptions and find the title that best fits. The job titles are: Carpenter, Lead Carpenter, Project Manager, Production Manager, Estimator, Sales Consultant, Sales Consultant/Designer, and Designer. Most companies have no more than three or four of these positions on their roster at any given time.
Is Anyone Helping With This?
Yes! Our Editorial Advisory Board and NARI. have been valuable partners in getting us this far. We’re also working with other industry organizations, though those arrangements aren’t yet finalized.
So please help the industry by taking this survey. And if you have any questions or comments, feel free to reach out to me.
