Best practice: I started in a junior designer position, and then moved over to my designer/sales position. I had a solid foundation of knowledge of design, but not as much sales.
As I was learning the ropes, I would ask others on the team, “Hey, can I shadow you on a selections meeting, or a site visit?” I shadowed nearly 20 designers and learned so much from that experience. I was able to gain something from each person. I learned different sales techniques and how to price out projects. It was a whole new wheelhouse for me. For this to work best, you must advocate for your personal development and pursue training opportunities wherever possible.
