Managers at home improvement companies play a pivotal role in the success of their teams. They are responsible for ensuring that projects run smoothly, clients are satisfied, and deadlines are met. But beyond operational responsibilities, the most successful managers are those who act as true leaders, guiding their teams through challenges with accountability and inspiration.

One of the most important aspects of management is accountability—not just holding your team accountable but being accountable to them as well. Managers who are accountable to their staff set a strong example of responsibility and integrity, which builds trust and respect and creates a positive and productive work environment.

It Promotes Responsibility. When employees see their managers holding themselves to high standards, they are more likely to adopt the same mindset. This encourages team members to take ownership of their roles and contribute in meaningful ways.

It Builds Trust. When managers are transparent about their actions and take ownership of decisions (good or bad), it builds trust with their team. Team members are more likely to follow the lead of someone who admits mistakes and learns from them, rather than someone who deflects blame.

It Encourages Open Communication. When managers take accountability, it creates an environment where employees feel comfortable providing feedback, asking questions, and raising concerns. When staff know that their manager is open to input, it fosters a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.

Empower Your Team: Micromanaging stifles creativity and leads to frustration. Instead, empower your team by delegating tasks, giving them autonomy, and trusting them to make decisions. When employees feel empowered, they’re more likely to take initiative and go above and beyond.

Every team will face challenges, whether it’s a tight deadline, an unexpected issue with a project, or internal conflict. How a manager responds to these challenges can make or break the team’s success.

In home improvement companies, challenges are inevitable, from material shortages to weather delays to client disputes. As the leader, it’s your job to navigate these challenges while keeping your team focused and motivated.

 

What to do when your team faces a challenge:

Stay Calm and Composed. In times of stress, your team will look to you for reassurance. If you panic or react impulsively, it can increase tension and cause your team to lose confidence. So, stay calm, assess the situation, and clearly communicate your plan of action.  

Be a Problem-Solver. When challenges arise, it’s important to quickly switch into problem-solving mode. Engage your team in brainstorming solutions and be open to their ideas. A collaborative approach not only leads to better outcomes but also empowers your team to think critically.

Provide Support. During difficult times, your team may need extra help—whether it’s additional resources, time, or emotional support. A great manager recognizes when their team is struggling and offers the necessary help to get them through it. This might mean rearranging workloads, bringing in additional hands, or simply offering a listening ear. Ask your direct reports “How can I help you?”

Maintain a Positive Outlook. When facing significant obstacles, maintaining a positive and solution-oriented attitude can uplift your team. Optimism doesn’t mean ignoring the problem; it means focusing on finding a way forward and keeping morale high. 

 

Tips for Leading Through Challenges:

  1. Remain objective: Focus on the facts and avoid emotional reactions to stressful situations.
  2. Involve your team: Collaborate with your team on solutions and make them feel part of the process.
  3. Communicate clearly: Ensure that your team knows what’s happening and what’s expected of them during a crisis.
  4. Celebrate success. Once a challenge has been dealt with, acknowledge the team’s efforts and celebrate the success together.
