Two new hardcover books from The Taunton Press provide remodelers with extensive design ideas.

In A House on the Water (224 pages), author Robert Knight focuses on six key design factors - a sense of fitting in, the experience of approach, balancing looking in and looking out, creating gracious transitions, shaping interior spaces and composing the elements - that can maximize a home's waterfront location. In Ranches: Design Ideas for Renovating, Remodeling and Building New (208 pages), M. Caren Connolly and Louis Wasserman present more than 20 case-study ranch homes to highlight that architectural style’s design flexibility, noting that many ranches are prime for remodeling because they’re well-built and have sound foundations.

  • Ecohouse, second edition (424 pages), focuses on sustainable design in various climates and cultures. Authors Sue Roaf, Manuel Fuentes and Stephanie Thomas present 10 case studies of houses and devote chapters to ideas such as photovoltaic system design, ventilation and solar hot-water design. In Architect’s Guide to Feng Shui (224 pages), Cate Bramble uses line illustrations to help explain the ethical and ecological elements behind feng shui. Architectural Press publishes both of these paperbacks.

Kevin Rhodes, a construction project manager with 25 years of experience in the building trades, compiled Working Spanish: Bridging the Language Barrier, Construction Edition. The 108-page paperback from 1stBooks Library offers Spanish-to-English translations of construction phrases and tips on communicating with Spanish-speaking workers. Visit www.HousingZone.com/store to purchase any of these books.

Working Spanish also is available in electronic form from the publisher (www.1stbooks.com).
