The home's cathedral ceilings, exposed beams and tongue-and-groove, solid cedar roof left few lighting wiring options. Paul Sullivan added 2x6s between each roof beam and recessed lighting in the newly created, 6-inch-wide spaces. He then had the rest of the ceiling plastered and painted white, giving the illusion of increased height even though the slope in the ceiling makes it lower than other ceilings in the home.

Paul Sullivan, CGR, owner of The Sullivan Co., wanted this kitchen to reflect the design of the entire home more appropriately. A previous kitchen remodel done in an American Colonial style clashed with the form and period of the contemporary post-and-beam construction and its Prairie-style influences.
Two-tone maple cabinetry breaks up the 200-square-foot kitchen's length (which was extended by 10 feet) and accentuates the island. To keep light flowing into the kitchen at the dining end, Sullivan used frameless, clear-glass doors, drilling hinges directly through the sheets and the wood frame. The two-tone approach also was employed in painting, and the two alternating colors in the custom-cut linoleum floor complement the paint.
Recessed lighting and commercial-grade, stainless steel appliances lend to the room's modern feel, and the appliances provide the durability and functionality for entertaining. With two sinks, vast countertop space and innovative storage ù the island's stainless steel column, for example, can be customized with various attachments ù the kitchen has multiple work zones that move beyond the idea of a work triangle and better suit large gatherings.
