Upping Your Game
If you're a professional remodeler wondering what trade association is right for you, I believe the choice is clear: the NAHB Remodelers Council. It’s the most high-impact organization in the residential remodeling space and is supported by the vast resources of the National Association of Home Builders.
I have been involved with the NAHB Remodelers Council for 25 years, and I can confidently say that the professional network I’ve developed as a result has been essential to my career and success as a remodeler.
While the NAHB is often associated with new home construction, nearly half (43%) of its builder members are involved in remodeling, and 21% focus on it exclusively.
One of the primary benefits of NAHB membership is the value it offers at the local, state, and national levels—through networking, advocacy, education, and high-level award-recognition programs.
I joined my local Remodelers Council so I could connect with like-minded professionals who understand the challenges and opportunities in my market—and the networking has provided me with invaluable insights. My involvement in the NAHB Remodelers Council has also enabled me to make connections with people across the country, and these relationship have helped me elevate my professional skills, improve my remodeling business, and grow as a company owner and leader.
When you join, your initial connections will come from active involvement in your local council and through efforts in leadership roles. Participation at the national level and in virtual subcommittee meetings and at such events as monthly Shoptalks, will provide information and contacts that will help you to up your game even more.
As you engage more at the national level, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of NAHB’s reach and resources. The association’s advocacy efforts are unwavering, and the codes team is staffed with specialists working to ensure that the concerns of remodelers are addressed in building and energy codes. NAHB’s federal lobbyists also advocate for such issues as health and safety regulations, labor laws, affordable credit, and trade and building materials concerns. NAHB’s exceptional tax advocacy staff has helped build the foundation for the pro-business tax environment over the last few years—and the tax legislation they’re working on this year is critical to future success.
Additionally, NAHB’s highly qualified economists collect and analyze data that shapes our businesses and supports our advocacy efforts. Resources for remodelers include the Remodelers’ Expenditures by Zip Code, which reflects the spending trends in local markets; the Remodeling Marketing Index (RMI), a quarterly check on the pulse of the industry; and the Remodelers Cost of Doing Business report, which provides insights on market trends and project costs. These resources are available to NAHB Remodelers for free or at a greatly reduced cost.
NAHB offers top-tier educational opportunities that give remodelers a competitive edge and enable them to become the expert their clients need and expect. Offerings address everything from construction technologies to business practices and include programs like the Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation that provide remodelers the knowledge necessary to modify homes for aging and physically challenged individuals so they can live safely and comfortably in their own homes.
Personally, I feel that what truly sets the Remodelers Council apart is the intellectual generosity of its members. They are mentors and industry experts who are willing to have a conversation about any construction question or business concern. They share insights on how they run their businesses, their experiences, and how they’ve overcome some of the same challenges you may be facing now. This spirit of mutual support fosters genuine success within the community.
But you must show up and be engaged to enjoy the value of membership!
I invite you to become part of this incredible organization. And when you join Remodelers Council, you’ll find a supportive network built on trust and a commitment to your success.
