The 2020 Women in Residential Construction Conference is shaking it up. Instead of the usual in-person extravaganza, this year’s conference will connect industry-leading women live online on Pathable, a proprietary events platform. While the pandemic has pushed many events online, instead of the new WIRC format being a setback, event organizers see it as a transformational moment.
“We started the WIRC conference about seven years ago, and it's absolutely kinetic,” says Tony Mancini, group director-principal at SGC Horizon, the conference’s parent company,. “It's the meeting place of all the successful women in the industry, and it just has its own personality and energy that's unsurpassed in anything else we do.”
A new kind of online event for WIRC 2020
That interactivity of the Pathable platform for WIRC 2020 sets it apart from some of the other virtual events that have cropped up since COVID hit. Instead of sitting passively in front of their screens, attendees can interact with other attendees and speakers, network, participate in roundtables, and join a variety of creative games and friendly competitions. Because of the freedom that an online format allows–a flexible schedule, no hotel, no airplane tickets–Mancini believes that more professionals will attend, leading to even greater educational content and networking opportunities.
“Our ability to bring in more speakers and more topics works well for our audience, so there will be even more editorial content than there normally is,” Mancini says. One speaker he is particularly excited about is keynote Sheryl Palmer, CEO of Taylor Morrison and WIRC Woman of the Year in 2018. She will kick off the conference, followed by other powerhouse speakers, breakout sessions, games, and networking opportunities.
One of the highlights of this upcoming conference is the wine tasting night where attendees can relax, and socialize. Wait... this event is online, so how is this possible? With a bit of innovation, WIRC organizers found a way. “When I first heard the idea for a wine tasting, I was like, ‘that’s impossible’” says Erika Taylor, director of content for Pro Remodeler. “But we figured out a way to make it happen. I’m excited by the opportunity to create that sense of being in a room together,” she adds.
Registered attendees will receive a gift card and curated list of wines and food pairings that they can pick up at a local store. Then, Lukas Dempsey, a professional sommelier at a three-star Michelin restaurant, will give a guided tasting–all online. He’ll walk through the characteristics of the wine, why it has that particular taste, and why different types pair well with specific foods. Cheers to that!
