The Wall Street Journal profiles the home improvement stories of three families who have made the plunge into aging in place.

The ideas come in the wake of a recent study from the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University, which found that less than 25 percent of homeowners above the age of 55 have a bedroom and full bathroom on the first floor of their homes or other universal design features.

Remodeling is the pricey option, but compared to the high cost of care in an assisted-living facility or nursing home, these improvements can make financial sense.
